There’s a big problem with this popular New Year’s Resolution.

Most people set resolutions when they are excited and motivated and often these goals are unrealistic and therefore unattainable – thus leading to disappointment.

Resolutions may include, losing a lot of weight in a short period of time, going to the gym four days a week for the next six months and getting a six pack by March. Sure there are people achieving these kinds of targets all the time but the reason others fail is due to the following factors.

It is essential that a goal you set is really important to you, not just something that you are doing to please the world. Goals you set that get you results are not the same as goals that get you inspired results. See the only results worth reaching for are one that inspire you. And the goals that don’t inspire you but you set for people-pleasing reasons are destined to crumble like a cookie. The energy required to achieve them is temporary. Sure you can wake up motivated and go to the gym for a few weeks and maybe even a few months, but the motivation will eventually run out. You can go on a diet for a reasonable period of time but if it is not inspiring to you, you can expect the excitement will wear off.

Secondly, when it comes to dieting so many diet hop, jump from diet fad to diet fad, only to abandon shortly thereafter. I’d like to challenge you to consider being determined this year to trying to figure yourself out. The reason why diets don’t work for everyone – and if they do they often don’t last – is because they are unsustainable. Following the recommendations of what others suggest you eat, is more often than not, incongruent with your tastes, preferences, and patterns.
